There aren’t many people who are unfamiliar with the hair tool’s brand GHD – it’s one of the best-known and best-loved manufacturers available. Particularly famous for bringing us curly haired girls the revolutionary ceramic flat iron, they’re a brand that’s synonymous with quality and innovation. I’d say that they really understand how important it is to select high quality hair care because, in my opinion, their products always deliver outstanding results.
Over the years, GHD have introduced many new hair tools into the marketplace, all designed to help improve texture and overall finish of hair. In the past couple of years they’ve brought out GHD Radial brushes too which are made of ceramic but are still lightweight and now I don’t use anything else. Particularly designed to give hair lift, body, shine and still care for hair as they glide through, these tools really complement the straighteners and hair dryers in their range.
Of course, if you don’t use GHD straighteners it doesn’t mean you can’t get all the benefits of the hair tools. If you do, then you’ll get the ultimate results as they really go a long way to get long-lasting and great looking results.
Below, I explain the differences between each brush and review my top favourites.

Differences Between the GHD Paddle and GHD Round Brushes
The paddle brushes are larger, wider and flatter than other hairbrushes and round brushes are cylindrical, with bristles all over the brush area. The difference between the two is what you use them for.
The paddle brush is suitable for brushing hair from root to tip and is particularly effective on thick or long hair, because it has greater surface area. It’s also useful for brushing hair while straightening, if you wanted to smooth out your hair that way.
Round brushes are not used for brushing hair but for styling hair into curls or adding body. There are different size round brushes, the very large ones are especially for big, bouncy blow-drying, the small brushes are for teasing little curls into hair and the mid-size brushes are best for medium thickness, medium length hair.
Understanding the GHD Brush Barrel Size
The brush sizes are numbered according to size from 1 to 4. Each size is designed for a different hair type and length. For example:
- Brush size 1 is for short hair styles
- Size 2 is for mid length hair styles
- Brush size 3 is good for longer hair
- Size 4 (maximum size) is for extra-long hair
How to Get The Best out Of Your GHD Radial Barrel Brush
Whichever brush you choose, it’s best to dry hair so it’s approximately 80% dry and then work in sections. Use the brush from the root and position your hair dryer so it is angled at the brush. Hold the tension as you glide your brush through your hair, always applying heat (but not too close to your head).
If you want tighter curls, leave the brush in for approximately 30 seconds and then use cold air to set the curl. Gently unwind and repeat over the rest of your head.
GHD Paddle Brush
This is the go-to paddle brush if you have medium to long hair. Large enough to cope with a good amount of hair at a time, yet lightweight too, it doesn’t pull, snag or break hair, it detangles in seconds and even removes knots. It’s also excellent for removing static. I use this one for styling and for brushing.
The GHD Natural Bristle Radial Brush Size 3
This is an excellent brush and great for styling. I don’t use this in conjunction with my GHD flat irons but if I want to add some volume or curl into my hair I use it alongside a powerful hairdryer.
It has natural bristles which means it’s kinder to your hair and it’s designed so it won’t snag or pull. It’s not a good brush if you have short hair but it’s perfect for medium or long hair.
GHD Ceramic Vented Radial Brush Size 4
Don’t buy this if you have short hair, this is most definitely only suitable for long or mid length hair. It’s excellent for creating volume and big curls and is made out of ceramic which means it holds onto heat. In turn, this helps reduce the time it takes to blow dry and it’s good for banishing frizz.
If you want some extra tips on how to use this brush, it’s best to dry hair off first so it is a little damp. Section out hair and wind a section around the brush under or over – depending on the look you want. Hold the brush with plenty of tension and use your hairdryer as you move the brush through your hair.
GHD Retail Hairbrush Oval Dressing Brush
If you’re looking for a brush to cover day to day use you’ll love the GHD Oval Dressing Brush which is designed for mid or long length hair. It is made with natural bristles and they help to distribute the hair’s natural oils from root to tip. For those of you who suffer with static in your hair, this will calm it down so no more flyaway hair!
It’s amazing for adding shine to hair and it has the added benefit of stimulating scalp circulation so promotes healthier looking hair. The handle is comfortable to hold and has a non-slip coating.
GHD Natural Bristle Size 2
This brush is perfect for mid-length or shorter styles that need lift, body and curl. Made out of ceramic, when used together with a hairdryer the material of the brush holds heat so speeding up the drying process.
While the brush is made out of ceramic, it’s still lightweight as the body is hollow. The handle features a non-slip material and is comfortable to hold. It’s a handy styling tool that really goes a long way to produce soft looking, natural curls with lots of volume and lift.
GHD Pink Paddle Brush
This pretty paddle brush is ideal for those of you with lots of hair or long hair. It’s lightweight and comfortable to use, with an easy grip. The wide brush head means you can style lots of hair on the go. With air holes through the bristle area allowing for good air flow, you get plenty of lift and body when using (rather than flat, dead straight looking hair). This is a great option for sleek looking hair.
GHD Natural Bristle Radial Brush Size 3
Another round bristle brush from GHD, this one is slightly larger and good for long hair or medium thickness hair. Made out of ceramic, it helps to conduct heat better during styling as it holds heat in its material, so it quickens up the blow-drying process.
The body is hollow (as the other brushes) so while it is made out of ceramic, it’s still a lightweight brush. The handle features non-slip technology so it’s very comfortable to hold and creates long-lasting, curly hair without frizz or flyaway.
