At Hotstylers.co.uk we were honoured to chat with celebrity and royal hairdresser Jo Hansford MBE herself. It’s not every day that you get to ask all those burning questions to one of the very best hairdressers in the world!
Jo’s luxury hair salon is based in London’s swish Mayfair and has been going for over 20 years. Jo has a host of well-known regular clients including royalty, all have Jo and the team to thank for their glorious looking hair. Clients include The Duchess of Cornwall, Liz Hurley, Angelina Jolie and Nigella Lawson.
Jo herself specialises in hair colour and knows exactly how to perfect the right shades for different skin tones so hair not only looks lustrous and natural it also enhances a woman’s beauty. Boasting her own collection of premium quality shampoos, conditioners and treatments, Jo and the team really understand how to look after hair so it stays healthy and has the WOW factor.
Whether you’re looking for a colour transformation, a superb precision haircut or you want to rectify damaged hair with a specialist Intensive Conditioning Treatment, this salon should definitely be your destination. Even if you live hundreds of miles away – make a day trip of it, book your hair appointment at Jo Hansford and why not factor in some smart shopping in Bond Street too?
Emma: Jo, what inspires you every day and where do you get your energy from? It must be hectic doing what you do!
Jo Hansford: Just being alive inspires me! I am constantly on the go at the salon and this keeps my energy levels up but I do make sure that I always relax at the end of the day with a nice glass of red wine in my stunning garden to re-energise for the next day.
Emma: What does a typical day in Jo’s life look like?
Jo Hansford: I work in the salon 4 days a week – 3 of those days with clients and I have one office day for meetings with my PR company and our product companies. I’m a morning person so wake up nice and early, have a double espresso and drive to the salon. I then have breakfast before a full day of clients. My clients travel from all over the world, including as far as Australia and it’s always a pleasure catching up with them, exchanging holiday recommendations or discussing the latest restaurant reviews.
Emma: Do you have any recommendations for genuinely avoiding heat damage from hair tool use?
Jo Hansford: I recommend the Ciment Thermique by Kerastase – it’s a cream that you apply and then blow-dry in – it really does give you hair protection from heated styling tools.

Emma: We know your salon is rated one of the very top salons in the UK. What makes it unique compared to others?
Jo Hansford: Our specialist selling point is that the brand has been built in the niche of hair colour. This is unique in a world where styling is always at the forefront of salons and yet we have almost as many colour technicians as stylists and of course the colourists. Our location, in the heart of Mayfair in London, is an important part of the brand and the team strive to consistently reach and exceed the highest expectations for the Jo Hansford clients. London is renowned as being the epicentre of hair in the UK and British hairdressing is respected and admired as creating and developing some of the best hairdressers in the world.
Emma: What are the best hairstyling tools for curling hair, creating a big, bouncy blow dry and for creating a sleek, straight style and can you advise on premium quality hairstyling tools for women on the go?
Jo Hansford: For curling and straightening hair, we love using GHD’s. They have unrivalled technology and really do deliver amazing results. For a big, bouncy blow dry, our stylist love using our ‘Jo Hansford Voluminous Spray’ before blow drying with a round bristle brush and then pin-curling the hair. We try to leave the curls in for as long as possible before releasing to create a gorgeous, red-carpet worthy look.

Emma: Do you have any advice for those out there who dream of becoming a top hairdresser?
Jo Hansford: Be prepared to work hard, be dedicated and keep learning. Practice as much as possible and take every opportunity that is offered to you. If you are hungry and prepared to work hard, your peers will recognise this and will help you achieve your goals.
We’d like to thank Jo for her time, we are truly delighted to feature her on our pages.
